Home Care Assistance Central Coast Supports National Stroke Week

At Home Care Assistance Central Coast, we are deeply committed to raising awareness during National Stroke Week — a vital time to shine a light on the serious risks and long-term consequences of stroke, which remains one of Australia’s leading causes of death and disability.

Throughout this week, we take the opportunity to remind our clients, their families, and the wider Central Coast community just how crucial it is to understand the early warning signs of stroke — and, more importantly, to act without delay.

To explain further, a stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted — either by a clot blocking a vessel or by a bleed. As a result, oxygen and nutrients can no longer reach the brain, which can lead to significant and permanent damage if not treated urgently.

Without urgent medical attention, permanent brain damage can occur. Every minute matters. The faster treatment is received, the better the chances of recovery and reduced disability.

Spotting a Stroke: Use the F.A.S.T. Method

Early recognition can save a life. The Stroke Foundation encourages everyone to remember F.A.S.T., a simple acronym for the most common signs:

  • F – Face: Does one side droop when they smile?
  • A – Arms: Can they raise both arms, or is one arm weaker?
  • S – Speech: Are their words slurred or difficult to understand?
  • T – Time: If you notice any of these symptoms, call 000 straight away.

Even if the signs disappear quickly, it may indicate a TIA (transient ischemic attack), which requires urgent medical review as it can signal a future, more severe stroke.

Additional Stroke Symptoms to Look Out For

  • Sudden weakness or numbness (especially on one side)
  • Blurred or lost vision in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding conversation
  • Dizziness, imbalance, or unexplained falls
  • A sudden, intense headache with no known cause

When in doubt — always call 000. It’s better to be cautious.

How to Respond in a Stroke Emergency

If someone appears to be experiencing a stroke:

  • Call 000 immediately.
  • Note the exact time the symptoms began — this can influence treatment options.
  • Stay calm, reassure the person, and follow the paramedics’ instructions until help arrives.

Stroke Prevention Starts with Awareness

Stroke prevention is just as critical as response. In fact, taking proactive steps can significantly reduce your risk of experiencing a stroke in the first place. To begin with, regular check-ups for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels are essential, as these factors are closely linked to stroke risk.

In addition to routine monitoring, it’s also important to encourage the following healthy habits:

  • A balanced diet
  • Regular physical activity
  • Avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol
  • Stress management and good sleep habits

With better education, community awareness, and early intervention, many strokes can be avoided.
