Reflecting on Service and Sacrifice: A Veteran’s Story This Remembrance Day
Today, Australians come together to honour the men and women who served with courage and conviction. Among these remarkable individuals is Anthony Scriggins, a veteran whose life tells a powerful story of duty, sacrifice, and the steadfast love he shares with his wife, Valerie, after nearly 70 years side by side.
Anthony’s journey began in Leicester, England. At just 17, he enlisted in the British Army and soon found himself navigating the realities of global conflict. Over his 20-year career, he became a Paratroop Instructor, teaching soldiers to land safely during parachute operations—training that saved countless lives.
He served in the Middle East, including Palestine and the Gaza Strip, where danger was constant. He speaks softly about the friends he lost, but with unmistakable pride for the soldiers he trained who returned home because of the skills he taught them.
In 1957, Anthony married Valerie, who became the anchor of their family during long deployments. Their three sons were all born throughout his service years, and like many military families, their life was stitched together with letters, waiting, and unwavering support. Valerie later led a hosiery factory, all while raising their growing family.
A bombing during Anthony’s service left him with significant injuries, including the loss of vision in one eye and several fingers. But his trademark humour never left him. He quips, “One eye, one hand, one leg—but I still manage just fine!” After recovering, he continued contributing through security roles at Army bases, determined to remain close to the defence community.
Upon retiring, Anthony and Valerie moved to Australia, following his identical twin brother. For more than two decades, they’ve made the Central Coast home. Their family has grown to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with granddaughter Kelly and her husband proudly serving in the Australian Air Force.
Anthony maintains contact with old mates from the UK, reminiscing about days gone by. He and Valerie fondly remember their spirited Jack Russell, Spike, and now enjoy caring for their son’s dog here and there.
As we reflect on Remembrance Day, Anthony’s life reminds us that service continues long after the uniform comes off. It lives on in families, in memories, and in stories like his—stories of dedication, resilience, and deep love.
